Episode 59: Be Not Afraid: The Re-creation of the World Has Begun

Paul reminds us in another letter that this laying down of Jesus’ life wasn’t some generic sacrifice offered up by the Creator of the universe but rather was a personal act of love for him, Paul, by name. “I have been crucified with Christ,” Paul writes to the Galatians. “It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me” (Galatians 2:20).

Episode 341: The Power and Attraction of How We Do What We Do, Part Three

We in ACTS XXIX would gently like to suggest, however, that it is not enough in these days in which we are living to simply be pilgrims of hope. We must also be heralds of hope. We live in the midst of a world that is riddled by fear, division, anger, depression, despair and so much more. As disciples of Jesus, that is, as men and women who have encountered Someone who has entirely changed our lives, who has brought us from darkness to light, we are called to proclaim to those with whom we work, study, play, and live that life is not in vain, that there is a God, and that He is good and knows what He is doing.

Episode 198: The Importance of Praise

Jesus has never said that our life should be a desert journey. If we understand the Christian life in this way, it should not surprise us that many turn their backs on the Church and Christianity and just go on to other traditions that promise peace, joy, and a full life. This is a reaction, not against Christianity, but against a type of Christianity that has lost its authenticity.

Episode 18: The Experience of Faith

Chapter Four helps us to understand what the dire predicament every single human person is in and why we need someone to rescue us.

“The controlling metaphor of this section is slavery and freedom. Paul paints a black-or- white picture of the human situation: either one lives in service to sin and remains in spiritual bondage, or one lives in obedience to God and enjoys liberation from sin’s captivity. It is a stark either-or: no fence-sitting, no third option.”
– Dr. Scott Hahn, Commentary on Romans

Ch 4 - It gets worse

Chapter Seven reminds us that as important as a compelling argument can be, there is something — Someone — necessary to move me to surrender.

“It is the Holy Spirit, therefore, who instills the sentiment of divine sonship into the heart, who makes us feel (not just know!) that we are children of God. The Spirit himself joins with our spirit to bear witness that we are children of God (Rom 8:16). This fundamental work of the Holy Spirit sometimes takes places in a sudden and intense way in the life of a person … On the occasion of a retreat…or on the occasion of prayer for a new releasing of the Spirit the soul is filled with a new light in which God reveals himself in a way as Father. … A feeling of great trust and confidence and a completely new sense of the condescension of God are experienced. At other times, instead, this revelation of the Father is accompanied by such a strong feeling of God’s majesty and transcendence that the soul is overwhelmed.”
– Raniero Cantalamessa, Life in the Lordship of Christ
