Discover: Rescue Project (DO NOT DELETE)

Chapter Four helps us to understand what the dire predicament every single human person is in and why we need someone to rescue us.

“The controlling metaphor of this section is slavery and freedom. Paul paints a black-or- white picture of the human situation: either one lives in service to sin and remains in spiritual bondage, or one lives in obedience to God and enjoys liberation from sin’s captivity. It is a stark either-or: no fence-sitting, no third option.”
– Dr. Scott Hahn, Commentary on Romans

Ch 4 - It gets worse

We turn our gaze to Jesus and ask, “Was he simply a wise, kind, and good man – or did He come to rescue us from powers against which we could never compete on our own?”

“Lord God Almighty, who sent your Only Begotten Son to endow humankind, imprisoned in slavery to Sin, with the freedom of Your sons and daughters, we pray most humbly for these children, whom you know will experience the allurements of this world, and will fight against the snares of the devil: by the power of the Passion and Resurrection of your Son deliver them now from the stain of Original Sin, strengthen them with the grace of Christ, and guard them always on their journey through life.” – Baptismal Ritual of the Catholic Church

The Series

Rescate (Spanish)

A few weeks back, we read the beginning of Romans 12, where we heard Paul’s exhortation to not be conformed to this world, to not let it squeeze us into its way of thinking, nor to allow ourselves to be squeezed into its way of thinking. But don’t most of us do that all the time?! Today, as we ponder Augustine’s rich insight, we see what’s at stake.
